We have much pleasure in collaborating with Jack Spence to publish his book about one of our newest Minsters. All profits from the sale including our costs will be donated to the charities supported by the Minster Church of
St Andrew's Plymouth.
Plymouth started as the little fishing village of Sutton and there has most probably been a church on the site of St Andrew's since Saxon times. This is no doubt where countless fishing families worshipped, gave thanks and asked protection. It has been connected with well known seafarers such as Sir Francis Drake, Sir Martyn Frobisher, Admiral Blake, the Hawkins and the Bligh families and in more recent times Sir Francis Chichester. The Pilgrim Fathers would most likely have come here before their departure from Plymouth in the Mayflower.

The Minster Church
The History of St Andrew’s is the History of Plymouth
‘In the middle of the eighth century a party of Christian colonisers sailed into Sutton Harbour,
set their farm a short distance upstream
and built their church on a ridge to the west of the farmhouse.’
So begins the story of the Minster Church.
For more than 1,200 years St Andrew’s has stood at the heart of the community that was once called Sutton but which we now know as Plymouth.
The church has witnessed wars, rebellions, pillage, destruction, reformation, restoration and re-consecration;
been favoured by kings, queens and princesses;
welcomed voyagers and heroes of the sea;
suffered conflict and plague;
and been served by illustrious ministers, devoted musicians and dedicated parishioners.
Throughout these many centuries St Andrew’s has served the people
as a place of sanctity, stability and continuity.
